Five Halloween Horrors from Etsy

In just a few short days, the streets will be filled with kids dressed up in hooded outfits, knocking on the doors of frightened old ladies and demanding free stuff.

Nope, not a replay of the summer riots: Halloween.

Halloween is a time the Etsy community warms to immensely, flexing those crafting skills to create kooky outfits and decorations for this spooky evening.

Initially, my search for Halloween goodies on Etsy was successful. The Halloween wine labels are devilishly good for adult parties, and these Seuss-inspired prosthetic noses are fantastic

But then this happened:

It’s like the secret lovechild of Chucky and Edward Scissorhands. Let’s not dwell on why they’ve placed an image of a cat in *that* area. Horrifying stuff.

This is weird too. I suspect some might like this. But seeing the skeleton of an unborn baby makes me feel a bit *vom*.

Following in the baby theme, you too could pay $65 for this piece of art. It’s a demon foetus apparently. Which is nice.

This is in the sale. And yet it’s still $20.40.

WHY? Actually, I’m not sure what’s worse here. The doll, or the creator speaking about it like it’s a real child.

Geek! A necklace especially for you

Angharad Mead writes… Name necklaces have been done to death over the past decade, but this creation from Etsy seller QuirkyBoutique gives a tired concept a fresh new twist.

Try wearing it with some thick-rimmed glasses and a wonderfully nerdy t-shirt (one of my friends has a slogan tee proclaiming ‘Sex, drugs and nuclear physics’ – I think that would do the trick).

The Geek necklace costs $22.00 and is available on Etsy.

Handmade Neil Gaiman Doll

How freakin’ awesome is this handmade Neil Gaiman doll?

He was made by blogger Meridian Ariel who creates all manner of weird and wonderful dolls and monsters, some of which are available to buy from her Etsy shop.

If only all geeky literary crushes resulted in such wonderful creations. I wonder if the real Neil Gaiman also smells of tea, coffee, cinnamon and vanilla?

Etsy Finds: Prim and Plush amigurumi molecules

This is an Etsy Finds with a twist as it is dedicated in its entirety to a single Etsy store. Prim and Plush have brought together science and craft in perfect harmony with their rather wonderful amigurumi molecules.

Let me introduce you to Mr Ethanol, or CH3CH3OH as he is known to his scientifically minded buddies, costs $25.

Or maybe you would prefer Mrs Methane, aka CH4, or her close friend Mr Carbon Dioxide who both cost a mere $15 each.

And if all this talk of science has left you thirsty then grab yourself a small cup of water for $18. Never has science looked so cute!

Etsy Finds: The Big Bang Theory

In celebration of the fact that I finally learnt all the words to the theme tune (I am shamefaced to admit ‘Maths, Science, History…’ had me stumped) and because I have a whole lot of love for those lovely geek boys from The Big Bang Theory, I have decided to dedicate an entire Etsy Finds to them.

Although I must confess I have sneaked in one non-Etsy item in the shape of the Mrs Sheldon Cooper necklace which I just couldn’t resist (a big thanks to my fellow dork Tamsin for bringing it to my attention.

The Google 2011 cushion

Every year since 2005, Brooklyn based design company ElastiCo has produced a cushion emblazoned with the top ten Google searches of that year.

In this digital age of transient trends, where celebrities are forgotten as soon as their 15 minutes of fame is up, the cushion is a permanent reminder of the things that the world was obsessing about and when.

As a web and popular culture fanatic, I find the idea of having a memorial of internet past on display in your living room a brilliantly original idea — imagine having the full set lined up on your sofa… although I’m not sure I’d want to be reminded of 2010′s obsession with Justin Beiber.

Beautifully silk screened and filled with down and feathers, the pillows cost $65 each and are available from their Etsy shop. Only one question remains: what on earth is a grooveshark?

Etsy Finds: Mmmmm Brains

This Etsy Finds is inspired, unsurprisingly, by The Walking Dead. I have watched the first few episodes and have to say I’m not entirely hooked yet but, in fairness, bearing in mind my preference for the eroticism of vampires over the bleak apocalyptic preserve of the zombies, it was always going to be a tough gig!

I do, however, love all the zombie inspired loveliness that can be found on Etsy at the moment. Here are some of my favourite pieces.

The best Christmas decorations for geeks

It can’t have failed to escape your notice that Christmas is now well and truly on its way. Not only are people roaming the streets with mugs of mulled wine and German sausages in hand, but the Coca-Cola advert is back on our screens which is a surefire way to tell the holiday season will shortly be upon us!

This year, leave that tired ol’ box of Christmas decorations in the attic and deck your halls, or tree at least, with heaps of geek instead!

Storm Trooper Felt Tree Ornament, £3.95 from Fabric Fancies

May the force be with you this Christmas! Star Wars fans should head straight over to Fabric Fancies on Etsy for a wonderful range of tree ornaments including Darth Vader, Boba Fett and a Storm Trooper or two.

AVP fans should also take a peek at the site as you can get to decide who will win the battle of Alien vs Predator on your tree?

Ghostbusters Peg People, £32.92, from Randomly Generated

Technically these aren’t Christmas decorations, but I can’t help but think that, with the help of a small cup screw, these Ghostbuster peg people from Randomly Generated could be hanging from my tree!

We have already featured the Dr Who regenerations peg people here on Dork Adore but for those with a more macabre outlook how about hanging Jason Vorhees from your Christmas tree?

Super Mario Bros. Boo Pair of Baubles, £3.95 from Noodle Jewellery

In a much less horrific, but still slightly spooky vein, you may wish to decorate your tree with a pair of these Boo baubles from Noodle Jewellery, which are also available in a set of three for £5.27.

Or perhaps you may be tempted by the shiny Pokémon or Animal Crossing baubles, amongst many others, that are also available in the holidays section of the shop.

Set of Four Retro Video Game Tree Hangers, £7.90 from OMEGAZOID

Yeah, yeah, I know I only just featured Spugmeistress in the recent Etsy Finds: Gaming Geekery post, but it would be remiss of me not to include this set of four retro video game inspired tree hangers.

Not only are they generally darn pretty fantastic but they are also made with translucent beads so will glow and shine as they reflect your tree lights!

Etsy Finds: Gaming Geekery

After taking a peek at the latest Tron Legacy trailer, this week’s Etsy finds is dedicated to some of my favourite old school computer games.

Tron 2885 Camera Lens Bracelet, $85 from ibwatson

I love the beauty and simplicity of this Tron inspired camera lens bracelet from Etsy seller ibwatson, aka Focal Length Designs.

I also love that all the jewellery in this store is made from unwanted broken camera parts. A wonderful example of upcycling at its very best!

Tetris Soap, $7.80 from DigitalSoaps

Have some fun times in the bathroom with this eight piece Tetris soap set, inspired by level nine of the game, from DigitalSoaps.

DigitalSoaps is a complete gaming geek heaven so if you are looking for a stocking filler for gaming fanatics I would highly recommend you go take a look, particularly at the impressively realistic-looking Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo/Wii and Sega console and controller replicas. (Incidentally, Emma wrote about Geek Soap’s games cartridge soaps earlier this year. Clearly, there’s big demand for game-based cleaning products.)

Set of Heart Meter Pins, $20 from spugmeistress

An excellent way to let your fellow geeks know your current life/health status with this set of four heart meter pins from spugmeistress.

You can also purchase an individual pin for $6, but buying the set allows you to wake up each morning and decide whether you are feeling fully charged or almost empty! I can see that they would come in very handy personally.

Nintendo Brooch, $18 from Ma Magasin

If you were ever, or indeed still are, the proud owner of a NES you can know wear your heart on your sleeve (or lapel) with this hand stitched Nintendo Brooch from Ma Magasin.

It is well worth paying a visit to the Ma Magasin shop to take a peek at some of the other wonderful work from this Manchester based crafter, including space invade bobby pins, moustache cufflinks and, I kid you not, an embroidered ‘sieve boob’.

Pong cross-stitch kit, $20 by craftease

I can still remember when we got our first family computer and programming it with a pong like game (yes, I am old!) so I couldn’t resist this Pong cross stitch kit from craftease. It comes complete with everything you need including black Aida cloth and white embroidery cotton as well as full instructions/patter. You even get a needle thrown in!

If you already have all the supplies then you can also buy the pdf pattern on its own for just $2.50.

These old school computer games really do seem to lend themselves exceedingly well to cross stitch don’t they?

Etsy Finds: Comic Book Capery

In a brand new feature I will be sharing with you some of my favourite Etsy finds each week. This week I mainly have comic books on my mind as I will be heading along to the wonderful Thought Bubble Comic Con later this month. So, in honour of this amazing event I have been hunting down wonderful comic book-related items.

Kapow headband, $23 from Janine Basil

This Kapow headband from Janine Basil’s Etsy shop is quite simply genius. There is a full range of Comic Sound FX headbands available, including ones that are covered with rhinestones, not to mention one that glows in the dark. Yazooks! Quite frankly I want them all.

The shop is also worth checking out for the rather awesome mirrorball head bust that a lot of the pieces are photographed on. I want one of those too!

Captain America handknitted Meerkat, $37 from Nifty Knits

I really don’t feel there is a great deal I can say about this fella, he pretty much speaks for himself I’m sure you will agree. You can buy Captain America Meerkat, along with his friends Wolverine, Cyclops, Gambit and Rogue from the X-Men from the Nifty Knits Etsy shop.

More of a DC Comics fan? Never fear as Nifty Knits have it covered with a wide range of super hero meerkats including Batman and Robin, Superman and Wonder Woman among them.

Vintage Comic Passport Case, $12.50 from Bookity

Your passport need never be naked again! Not when you can dress it up in this fabulous passport wallet made from a vintage comic.

Throw on your stetson and mosey on over to the Bookity Etsy shop right now cowboy. Or for those of you who are full of gung-ho and daring-do you might prefer the Red Falcons fight the Air Smugglers version.

Superhero Notebook, $35 from Bombus

I have a whole pile of notebooks but I would happily add this wonderful hardback Superhero Notebookfrom the Bombus Etsy shop to my collection.

The notebooks are customisable so you can choose the superhero that you think most reflects your personality. Who would you be?

Prof Brian Cox Rocks Necklace, $12 from Polka Dot Emporium

Not technically comic book related but Lynn, the lovely lady behind Polka Dot Emporium, is actually going to be selling her wares at Thought Bubble so I will get the chance to check them out in person!

If you are not so lucky, you can get your mitts on this Prof Brian Cox Rocks necklace from the Polka Dot Emporium Etsy shop.

Now it is worth noting that although I shall tend to feature UK-based makers, shop local and all that malarkey, all Etsy pricing is in US dollars. I seem to recall they had a handy currency conversion function at some point recently but it seems to have vanished again.
