Five iPhone 4 cases for geeks

So the last couple of months have been a bit rocky for Apple. They finally released the iPhone 4….only to discover that the aerial is basically botched.

Still, it’s not all bad. The aerial only refuses to work if you place your actual hands over it. Y’know, like when you use a normal mobile phone. All you need to do to avoid the issue is by covering up that nice shiny glass case with another case to stop any of that unwanted direct contact.

The ‘bumper’ Jobs is offering is understandably basic (considering he has to give millions out for free), and the alternative options are hardly inspiring either. So, if you have to use the dull bumpers, why not splash out on a new case to store it away in?

This Tetris iPod iPhone Case Pouch Cozy on the right is from Etsy sellar Egoor England. Thanks to Etsy’s latest decision to convert all their prices to Pounds for British visitors, it’s easy to see that the case will cost you just £14.17 (plus £1.29 for postage in the UK).

This Doctor who iPhone sleeve is by CrankCases, who clearly has an affection for all things dorky when it comes to designing iPhone cases.

The range also includes some very British designs, like the mix-tape design, a case disguised as a 20 pound note, and a classic red phone box.

The cases are £13 each. They’re made of sustainable materials too, so you get that nice eco-friendly glow too.

For film geeks

Anyone who grew up loving cult movie The Princess Bride will appreciate this name badge case from Inigo Montoya. If you haven’t seen it you really should watch it. It’s got giants, swashbuckling and wizards. What more do you need?

It’s from Etsy user CoolBeans717, and will cost you £12.89 plus p&p.

For magpies

Finally, we’ve got some bright and beautiful cases from Coach. They’re not massively geeky, but even geeks need a bit of bling sometimes. These universal cases are $58 each. I’ve got my eye on the gold one.

Five crafty iPad cases

Here at Dork Adore, opinion is still divided on the iPad. Susi has learned some big iPad lessons, and I really, really want one…although I’m still not completely convinced why.

If you’ve already got your iPad, you’ll probably want to keep it in the perfect, glossy condition it arrived in. We looked at some of the early iPad cases a few months ago, and an eco-friendly range last month. Now our friends in the crafting community have caught up with a selection of handmade cases and sleeves.

Emporium Of Geek over on Folksy have this hand-tailored pinstripe iPad sleeve for £19.99. A white-collar dream.

Here are four more crafty sleeves and cases for your Apple tablet.

Part teenage boy’s duvet cover, part grandad’s pyjamas, this cover should be really wrong. I quite like it though, especially as it did in fact start its life as a pair of retro curtains. It’s from Folksy seller toggle for £26.

This sparrow and leaf design is a bit pricier at £65, but it’s 100% leather. The range is by Beautiful Skin, who will also adapt all of their current iPod and iPhone designs to an iPad size.

One for the geeks now, a Gameboy iPad Sleeve ($34). It’s by Etsy seller Yummy Pocket, who also has Etch a Sketch, cassette and personalised cases.

Valentine’s Day gifts for geeks

C’mon now, you didn’t think we’d get through February without at least one Valentine’s Day post, did you? I know it’s all a scam thought up by Hallmark to get us all spending money, but well….it’s all a bit of fun really.

Floundering for ideas for the dork you desire? We’ve come up with a few suggestions,

For the cosy couple

Since Valentine’s Day falls on a Sunday this year and Sunday is the day for loafing about, I can’t resist suggesting the Double Slanket, (Firebox.com, £49.95). The big brother of the classic Slanket, it’ll make life a little easier for the newlyweds joined at the hip.

For the old romantic

For a modern take on a classic love token, consider the USB Mix Tape by Suck UK from Prezzybox.com (£9.95)

The USB Mix Tape allows you to create an hour long playlist of ‘your songs’, load them onto a USB stick and store them in the retro cassette case with your special message on the cover. There are six styles of cassettes available.

For the computer geek

This red love heart shaped USB PC optical mouse is from Amazon (£9.49) and will happily compliment the laptop accessories of your favourite computer geek. Sure, it’s cheesy, but isn’t that what Valentine’s Day is all about?

For the music fan

Everyone loves iPods,but now you can take it to the next level and get your very own personal (and possibly embarrassing) message engraved into the back.

Engraving is free, so all you need to do is order your iPod from the Apple website.

Prices for the video iPod start at around £118.

For the Folksy fan

Folksy has some wonderful and thoughtful gifts this year for the cash-strapped. These love tokens on the right are only £1.50 for five, and you can customise them with your message. Give them one for 3 hours of uninterrupted PS3 time, a massage or a Star Wars marathon.

Make your own: Tech Head Fascinator

This Christmas, I’m switching a lot of my present shopping from the high street to online marketplaces like Folksy.

Buying from independent designers means you know exactly where your items came from, you get to speak to a real person, and most of the sellers allow you to add your own personal touch to your purchase.

Some of the items are really beautiful, and others are…a little odd. Take the Tech Head Fascinator on the right from Hatastic. Created using USB cables, it’s not exactly the usual head furniture you’d see at a wedding or the races.

Saying that, at least it would be a decent ice-breaker. The designer of the item was so proud of it she’s they’ve shared the step-by-step tutorial, so you can create your own.

Pac-Man Jewellery from Folksy

As you can probably tell from this post, I’m a big fan of the 80s. My weakness for all things retro and geeky doesn’t just stop at kids clothing, and after writing that piece I had a little wander onto Folksy to see what I could find.

Turns out, there are quite a few jewellery designers who share my love for this particular era. For instance, Ich Bin has created this Pac-Man Charm Necklace featuring the famous Pac-Man and ghosts with googly eyes.

Nifty Knits had the same sort of idea, and created this knitted necklace. Costing £4, even the little beads bridging the gaps look like Pac-Man food.

I found these Pac-Man and Mrs Pac-Man brooches from Magpie Moments for £5.50, and figured they’d be cute on the lapels of a thick winter coat or knitted scarf.

Finally, these blue Pac-Man earrings from Glamorous Glue for £4 are a glittery bit of fun, and come in a variety of different colours.
