Free Fuzzy Rubik’s Cube Pattern

As a child of the 80s I was obviously fairly obsessed with the Rubik’s Cube for a small period of my life, despite never managing to complete it without resorting to cheatery. So I was delighted to stumble across this free pattern for making your very own fuzzy Rubiks Cube on Obsessively Stitching.

Unfortunately, it is not functional — in other words you can’t twist it round and solve the puzzle, but you could totally make a solved cube and beat the darn thing at its own game!

Personally I think it would make an awesome pincushion for your favourite geeky sewing pals. And if you have a car in need of a bit of pimpin’ you could do worse than whip up a pair to hang from your rear view mirror just like the author of Obsessively Stitching did.

And once you are done with this project then why not try out Obsessively Stitching’s other monster sized Rubik’s Cube projects, the Rubik’s Cube Ottoman and Rubik’s Storage Cube.

Free Super Mario Mushroom Cushion Pattern

I have mentioned previously how well old school computer games lend themselves to cross stitching but that’s by no means the old craft that works well. This free Super Mario Mushroom cushion cover pattern by the plaid scottie is a fine example of how good old patchwork techniques can be used to replicate perfect pixels!

Get that needle and thread out now and you will have plenty of time to rustle one up for very favourite geek crush this Valentine’s day. You’ll be sure to score major heart points!

Well now you can thanks to the legendary plush maker Heidi Kenny of My Paper Crane who has shared the pattern for the doll she made for her mega Harry Potter fan son.You can download the pattern and instructions from Heidi’s blog and get sewing right now! Heidi also says she still has plans for several other Harry Potter characters so it may be well worth keeping a close eye on her blog.

Angry Birds Plush Toy Pattern

Did you know that over 12 million copies of the supremely addictive Angry Birds game have been downloaded? Fancy playing a game of Angry Birds in real life*? Then why not whip yourself up your very own Angry Bird plush toy with this pattern and tutorial from Obsessively Stitching. Just like the game, the pattern is free.

There is also a tutorial on the site for Angry Birds Christmas tree ornaments too if your tree is still looking a bit bare.

Free mini Mario Mushroom & Invincibility Star amigurumi patterns

Earlier this week I gave you a roundup of some of the best Christmas decorations for geeks. However, as wonderful as they all are, it can’t be denied that us crafty types can never resist the opportunity to do it ourselves! So I give you, not one, but two free patterns to get you crafting up a storm this festive season with these mini Mario mushrooms and invincibility stars from Amy’s Odyssey.

Who could possibly resist the sight of these cute little crochet fellas peeking out through the branches of their Christmas tree this festive season? If you make plenty you could even string them together for some totally dork-tastic Christmas bunting!

But please do remember, mushrooms are for life not just for Christmas, so be sure to find them a new spot to live once the tree comes down!

Star Trek Potholders and Buffy Love: the best of the craft blogs

I am starting to imagine a very Harry Hill-style jingle for this weekly roundup of the best projects and news from the craft blogosphere. Let’s all sing it together, it’s time for ‘craft blog highlights of the week’.

Thanks to the fab folk at Geek Craft I’m able to sneak in yet another free pattern this week with these crocheted Star Trek potholders from Off the Hook Astronomy
Although not strictly crafting, this week Craftzine have been treating us to some rather tasty treats featuring some gluten-free Thanksgiving recipes from new book Cooking For Geeks by Jeff Potter. I think I will be giving the Butternut Squash Soup and Sage Rush Cocktail a go!
I am totally smitten by the uber-geeky Roses are #FF0000, Violets are #0000FF cross-stitch by innergeek which I stumbled across in the Geek Craft Flickr group pool
And finally over on MrXStitch, beefranck gave us an almighty stitchgasm sharing this Buffy the Vampire Slayer cross stitch by buffyfan1977

Gryffindor scarf knitting pattern: Harry Potter Craft Roundup

Even those non-Harry Potter fans amongst us couldn’t fail to have noticed that Harry Potter fever is upon us again! In honour of the imminent release of Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 1, here is my pick of some of the best Harry Potter related craft projects and tutorials for your enjoyment.

Want to go around scaring the bejesus out of everyone? Then why not have a go at making a Death Eater Mask from Tektonten Papercraft. Both full size and half size mask templates are available.
Declare your allegiance with these free crest stencils by Jennifer Ofenstein from her blog sewhooked. Simply print out and cut out the gray area and get stencilling!
Instructables has a whole heap of amazing Harry Potter inspired projects, some of the very best are even collected together for you in a handy guide! One of my favourites is this super simple Awesome Harry Potter wand project by KaptinScarlet that requires little more than a sheet of paper, a glue gun and some paint! You can even get fancy and add a UV LED in the tip and then you will have a wand that can reveal all sorts of secrets!
And we couldn’t do a Harry Potter pattern round-up without including a free Gryffindor scarf pattern could we? This rather stylish example was designed by Rachel Alexandra from the bookke werm’s realm.

Free TARDIS socks knitting pattern

Banish boring socks this Christmas!

Grab those knitting needles and whip up a pair of these wonderful TARDIS socks in time for the festive season. Give them to friends and family and you are guaranteed* to be their favourite son/daughter/sister/brother/friend.

The free pattern is available from the witty little knitter website, which is a website dedicated to the knitting of the authentic Doctor Who scarf.

Seriously, if there was ever anything you wanted to know about those scarves, including an analysis of the relative scarf lengths, I’m sure you could find it on there!

Last Minute DIY Halloween Costumes

Left it a bit late to get your Halloween outfit sorted this year? Did you fail to pay heed to Emma’s Best Halloween Outfit recommendations last week and now find yourself in a panic?

Well now, shame on you, whatever were you thinking? Fortunately, I have been spending some quality time with the internet recently and am able to point you in the direction of some pretty darn amazing DIY Halloween costumes that you should be able to whip up in no time at all.

1. Customise a cardboard tube

I stumbled upon this rather wonderful Spike Through The Stomach costume by gnatquill on Instructables. You should be able to make this one pretty quickly and it doesn’t require much more than some cardboard tubes, paint, elastic and some clothes you don’t mind destroying.

It was one of many wonderful entries in the Instructables Halloween Competition, which is a great place to take a look if you are lacking inspiration, plus the competition runs until 7th November so it’s not too late to enter either!

2. Transform a hooded top

Another great idea, when time is of the essence and you have a spare hoodie to hand, comes from Martha Stewart’s Crafts Dept. The wolf is just one of the examples of what can be done with a hoodie, some felt, fabric glue and a bit of imagination. If you head over to the original post you can also see the really rather impressive dinosaur hoodie and *the* best frog I have ever laid my eyes on.

This is definitely a very versatile project with endless potential for customisation which would work really well for small people too.

3. Real Vampires wear tracksuits

I will be exceedingly surprised if there isn’t an whole slew of True Blood-inspired costumes on show this Halloween. If you really want to nail the look of your favourite character then look no further than the True Blood wiki for a comprehensive True Blood Halloween Costume How-To.

If you can pull off the tracksuit and hair foils just like a certain Eric Northman then you will have no complaints from me!

4. Go ga ga for Gaga!

Yup, to finish up it has to be the obligatory Lady Gaga costume because you just know that’s who all the cool kids will be at Halloween this year! And thanks to the lovely folk over at craftster you can make everything from a Lady Gaga red lace hat just like the one she wore to the VMA’s to a mirrorball bra a la Just Dance.

If you are really cutting it fine then throw on a leather jacket, grab yourself some coke cans and wrap them in your hair. There are some great hair and make-up tips for the Telephone look on Instructables from angelabchua
