Reviewing the Neutrogena Wave recently, I realised that while I might not be a big fan of the product in question, I do like the concept.

I was approached to test the Clarisonic Plus Skin Care System & Spot Therapy Kit, which works on the face and body.

A little more interesting than the humble loofah, but how does it compare to the Wave?

The pack consists of the handheld device, charging station, two heads, and several products for the various cleansing options.

It’s fairly simple to use, all you have to do is twist the suitable brush onto the handset, run it under water, and add the cleanser. You have three to choose from, depending on what your skin needs, and an exfoliator for the body attachment.

Using the brush is very soothing, with the vibrations relaxing your skin rather than being abrasive. The device comes with an internal timer similar to the Braun toothbrush, which lets you know how long to spend on each part of your face with an extra vibration.

For an hour after the treatment, my skin was red and blotchy. Not uncomfortable as such, but not particularly attractive either.

However, after the initial hour and a little bit of moisturising, the appearance of my skin had noticeable improved.  Smoother and brighter, I was really impressed! The results rival most facials I’ve had recently, and I even had complements on my glowing skin.

So, the pros and cons.

Wins points for:

• The results! My skin looks much better, and I’ve noticed that my foundation glides on and sinks in easily since using it.
• It’s waterproof, so you can use it in the shower for your body and face.
• Rechargeable, so no messing about with batteries

Loses points for:

• The price: £172 is pretty pricey, but if you treat yourself to regular facials, this actually works out as a cheaper substitute.
• The initial charging time. A whole day!
• It’s not quite nimble enough for the area around my nose.

Conclusion

If I had £172 handy, I’d seriously consider buying this. Just don’t try and take your eye makeup off with it. Ouch.

I mentioned the Neutrogena Wave in a recent post about vibrating makeup.

At the time I was a little dubious at how well it would work against my tried-and-tested cleansing routine. I already exfoliate on a weekly basis, so I was interested in how this would match up.

So did I get swept away by the Wave? Or was the whole experience a wash out? (sorry!)

The new range of Wave products include a set of blackhead-eliminating pads, which came with the set I was sent.

The Wave was easy to set up, I just popped the supplied battery into the hand held device, attached one of the pads to the front, and ran it under warm water.

Using the Wave to exfoliate was straightforward, and it’s nimble enough to use on more difficult areas like around the nose. I was expecting masses of foam, particularly as the advert gives that impression, but there was barely a trace of soap on the skin.

The results were mixed:

Gains Points For:

• Being easy to use
• Being small and compact
• No mess from bottles and pumps
• Felt pleasant on my skin
• Left my skin feeling softer

Loses points for

Dry skin on my forehead, possibly due to the soap

Little difference to quality of my skin

Little difference between this gadget and normal exfoliaters

Expensive to re-stock on the pads

Conclusion

This is one of those products where the results depend on your skin. Personally, I have combination skin and I found it too drying. For those that are prone to greasy skin, this may be more beneficial. It’s not a bad gadget for deep cleansing your skin every day as it’s gentle too.

Having experienced the special joy of adult onset acne, a miracle cure for spots is something I’d be happy to pay for – especially considering the amount I’ve spent over the years on pots of nonsense and magic oils.

The Zeno zit zapper works by heating up the spot to kill the bacteria underneath the skin. For that reason, it doesn’t work on spots that have already broken the surface and formed an attractive white head. Instead, you have to get the spots early. You’ll also need to treat them regularly, applying the heat in 30-second bursts that the Zeno timer counts out for you.

The zapper chomps its way through batteries, although you won’t be able to treat more than a few spots at a time thanks to the automatic cut-out. This prevents you from going crazy and over-treating a spot, but it can get quite frustrating having to wait for the zapper to power up again so you can treat your next pimple.

There’s no doubt that lumps under the skin are immediately reduced after an application of the heat treatment. It’s also great at getting you to stop picking your face, because if you break the skin you can’t use the zapper on it. And if you take care to always clean the Zeno heat patch properly, you’ll be keeping the spot a lot cleaner than if you were pawing at it with your grubby fingers.

However, it’s quite an expensive gadget, takes a lot of dedication to use regularly, and doesn’t miraculously heal your spotty face over night. In fact, you may come to suspect that it’s basically doing the same job that some cotton wool and a pot of hot water does. The makers would probably point out that this gadget provides a far more accurate and safe heat, which is quite probably fair. But it’s a gadget that takes dedication to use. And without a miraculous improvement in my spots, I soon left it languishing in my bathroom cabinet.

No, you haven’t stumbled into the naughty toys section  of this site by mistake, this really is the Fashion and Beauty area.

It seems that the beauty world has discovered its latest gimmick to lure us all into buying their products. Vibrating beauty.

First up, Estee Lauder. They’ve introduced the TurboLash All Effects Motion Mascara (right) This award winning £28 mascara claims to improve volume, curl, length and separation with one coat as it buzzes through your lashes.

Which all sounds great, though I’d be a little nervous putting something vibrating so close to my eyes.  Maybelline also offer a vibrating mascara, costing half the price, falling under the name of Pulse Perfection. I have to admit I’d be more tempted with the cheaper option. Plus you can choose to turn off the vibrations with the latter.

Neutrogena have been in the buzzing beauty market for a while now with the impressive sounding ‘Wave Power Cleanser‘. Sounds like a floor cleaner, looks like a foot exfoliator, and apparently the vibrations open up your pores to thoroughly clean your face. All you have to do is pop one of the disposable pads into the attachment, rinse it to activate the foam, and then power it up and cleanse away.

Probably not the most eco-friendly product due to the disposable pads, but it’s cheaper than I had assumed at £12.99.

So that’s makeup and skincare covered, but what about your hair? The Pink Vibe Hair Straightener is the kind of product a curly haired girl like me loves. I’m addicted to my GHDs, but these straighteners claim to eliminate any pulling or snagging with its vibrating action. The vibrating function means that you don’t have to clamp down on the hair so hard, and therefore avoid causing too much damage to your hair.

They’re £94 if you fancy something a bit different.
