Top five time travel films in honour of Looper

October 18, 2012 By Charles Williams

If you haven’t had your fill of time travel motion pictures recently thanks to Looper, Charles has put together a list of his favourite dimension-defying flicks.

Which is your favourite?

1. 12 Monkeys

Willis (again) plays a convict from a future Earth ravaged by a deadly virus. He’s sent back in time to find out what happened and get samples of the virus so a cure can be developed. Or is he just an escaped mental patient?

  • 12 Monkeys on LoveFilm
  • 12 Monkeys on Netflix
  • 12 Monkeys on Amazon

2. Primer

Guys build time machine by mistake. Guys use it to make money. Guys experience horrific creeping dread as multiple future versions of themselves with murky agendas start showing up. All on a $7000 budget.

  • Primer on LoveFilm
  • Primer on Amazon
  • Primer on Netflix

3. Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure

Wyld Stallyns rule.

  • Bill & Ted’s on LoveFilm
  • Bill & Ted’s on Netflix
  • Bill & Ted’s on Amazon

4. Back To The Future Part II

The first one’s the classic, but the second one’s the one with all the hoverboards, parallel universes and clever insertion of new events into the first film’s timeline.

  • Back to the Future Part 2 on LoveFilm
  • Back to the Future Part 2 on Netflix
  • Back to the Future Part 2 on Amazon

5. The Butterfly Effect

I swear if you squint and imagine better actors in the Ashton Kutcher and Amy Smart roles, this is actually a really good script getting butchered.

  • The Butterfly Effect on LoveFilm
  • The Butterfly Effect on Netflix
  • The Butterfly Effect on Amazon

Primer has got the best mind-bending actual time travelling and paradoxical element to it, and super impressive given the low budget. Admittedly I have not seen 12 Monkeys, though I will have before the weekend is through!

I loved Primer – although I watched shortly after having my first baby and my brain struggled even more than it normally would with it.
