Barely-there colour trend hits technology.

December 14, 2013 By Abi Silvester

All-over white, interspersed with occasional flashes of strong colour, is a big feature of winter 2013 dressing, and this look is perfectly aligned with what we’re seeing in the world of designer tech. It’s a look that’s very easy on the eye – especially after a few seasons of pattern mania.

The preoccupation with barely-there colouring is all a part of the current trend for fuss-free, clean-lined design being championed by Proenza Schouler (top right), Tommy Hilfiger (bottom left) et al., and frankly it’s far easier to pull of this look through the medium of your gadgets than it is through bulky and crease-prone fabric! Here’s how we did it with the help of some of our current favourite audiovisual products.

This look itself takes inspiration from the elegant beauty of machines, so channelling it through tech is really easy: just go for clutter-free monochrome designs to match your chic clutch bag and streamlined outerwear, but a jolt of bright colour will add interest.

The world of wearable tech has embraced the trend in a particularly big way, with plenty of all white or semi-transparent items to fit in with an overall pared-down look. Headphones, touchscreen-friendly gloves and mobile cases are looking a lot less garish than their predecessors of a few seasons ago, while everything else from cameras to home audio has followed suit.

We love the simplicity and clean lines of the products featured above, from the Ultimate Ears UE boom – a small and slick bluetooth speaker that emits glorious 360 sound – to the Samsung Galaxy Camera, our new favourite compact point-and-shoot. Keep an eye out for more stylish products being created along these streamlined design lines, as the catwalk is very much on a clean and simple tip next season too!
